Mr HAWKE (Mitchell—Minister for International Development and the Pacific and Assistant Defence Minister) (16:49): For 60,000 years that we know of, two things have dominated our continent's destiny: drought and fire. We must never forget that our continent is covered in eucalyptus, an ancient tree, an incredible species born from fire and a tree that not only burns but explodes.
Thank you to the many schools in Mitchell who lodged an application under the Local Schools Community Fund.
Under the Local Schools Community Fund, funding of up to $200,000 was available for schools in each Federal electorate to benefit students and school communities through funding contributions for small scale projects and their associated costs.
Mitchell received a large number of applications and I am delighted to announce that after a challenging review and recommendation process, 12 projects totalling $200,000 were successful.
With more lives, homes and economic livelihoods at risk in communities like Eden, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced the establishment of a $2 Billion National Bushfire Recovery Fund to assist those affected by the fires.
$2 billion over the next two calendar years. Starting now.
